Back pain is a common difficulty frequently caused by overusing or misusing the muscles of the back. In a major number of persons, low back pain tends to be frequent in nature with a waxing and waning class to it. In a small fraction of sufferers this condition can become chronic.

Nearly every person will have as a minimum one incident of low back pain at several times in his or her life. The pain can differ from severe and long term to mild and short lived. It will determine within a few weeks for most people.

Population studies illustrates that back pain involves most adults at several period in their life. Lower back pain is most widespread in patients among the ages of 20 and 40 years but can be more harsh and disabling in elderly patients.

Providentially however, the majority of patients suffering back pain will convalesce and only 5% go on to develop a chronic condition. All lower back pain in children should be measured gravely and medical advice should forever be sought if the pain persists longer than a few days.

Treatment of Lower Back Pain

  • Massage therapy may assist some patients.
  • Ice and/or heat use (or moist heat) has uncertain advantage.
  • Chiropractic treatment can help in a few patients but the long term help has not yet been demonstrated in studies.
  • Psychological counseling may be needed for this condition.
  • Antibiotics will be required in cases of infection and should be recommended based on feeling of the condition.
  • Surgery is appropriate for a handfull of patients.
